Happy, happy Inkutatash! Everything ato Getachew said about inkutatash is accurate except one point. This is about ‘yenku tatash’. Inkutatash has nothing to do with Inku -jewelry or ‘tata’ – hardship, need or problem. The word inkutatash simply means inku inkuta, inku inku – gift giving, exchanging of gifts. Inkuta simply means gift or something given. Inkutata is like I give you, you give me – exchange of gifts. This gift of course is the adey abeba. In fact, the very word ‘abeba’ is an evolution of the word ‘gift’ In geez, ‘abe’ is to give. Abeba means gift, giving, an offer, and so forth. The root – gift of flower evolved into the general term abeba – ‘flower’. Again Melkam Inkutatash!
