Ethiopia: Mekele-Woldia 1.6 billion dollar rail construction

Mekele-Woldia 1.6 billion dollar rail construction and the postponing of Meles’s Award Ceremony

by Muse Abebe

In the last two days there has been some news article that has been published on TPLF mouth piece, Radio Fana. One of

Mekele-Woldia 1.6 billion dollar rail construction and the postponing of Meles’s Award Ceremony

Google directions: Mek’ele, Tigray – Weldiya, Ethiopia

the news states that an agreement has been made between the Ethiopian Train Corporation and Chinese CCCC for the construction of train line that extends from the city of Mekele to Woldia, in North Wollo. It is necessary to mention the claim of TPLF that reiterates all the region north of the city of Woldia to be part of Tigray and this has been included in the map made by TPLF in 1976. The construction of the line costs 1.6 billion dollar and this is part of the train rail that extends to Tajura. The agreement was mad between Ethiopia’s Train Corporation chief Dr. Getachew Mengistu and chief of CCCC. According to the mayor of Mekele, the train line will contribute a lot in terms of exporting ‘huge resources’ in Tigray.

When we read this news pieces, different questions comes to our mind. First of all, it is essential to enquire whether the construction of the line is a priority. In a country where there is not any working train network, the construction of such expensive lines needs to be made in parts of the country which are more productive than Tigray. Compared to other regions, Tigray is one of the arid areas of the country where there has been shortage of water and land resources. Even though there may be some products that may be produced in the region, such expensive trail line to export such meagre products is unwarranted. The justification to provide to construct such line in a region that is unproductive has not any economic justification. Such train lines should rather focus to the western and southern part of the country that is more productive than Tigray. Even if there are other train line projects are planned, it is questionable why the Mekele line got priority and the others have been in the backlog. In addition to this, in light of the resourcefulness of the other regions of the country, more and more train lines are needed in these regions rather than in places where there has never been any significant resource. The construction of the line is largely in line with the longstanding position of the regime to provide preferential treatment to Tigray. Such discrimination creates division and enmity among peoples. A regime that claims to have represented the whole country is expected to be fair!

In related development, an award ceremony that stages Meles as guest of honour has been postponed for a week. The ceremony organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology to honour inventors and scientists has been postponed due to ‘busy schedules’. The ceremony that was scheduled to be staged on the 28th of June has been now postponed to the 5th of July. Since there has never been any international meeting that makes Meles busy, the pretext indicated for postponing of the ceremony is not water holding. It may rather be related to the health condition of the dictator. Since he has lost much weight due to his deteriorating health conditions, the postponement of the ceremony may be related to give him time to revive. The last showdown for the presence of Meles would be his must appearance at the last date of this year’s parliamentary secession where the budget for next year is to be approved on ore before the 30th of June.

  1. Mr.Muse Abebe,

Thank you for your conern and raisng the questions about the rationl of building such project in region where most of the population will not benefit from.Having said that I don’t agree with your suggestion to raise the issueto Weyane leaders.Infact it sounds to me you still need to know more about weyane. I for one I support only those Ethiopianwho want to raise armns against the weyane rule.

lately,I come to see the whole thing about Ethiopia in aclear way more than others.there is conspiracy within Ethiopians. And these conciprcy is centerd within organizations who pose as oppostion but are working for shabia and weyane.I am not implicating in this Andenet or UDJ,but others.

  2. It is ironic that the TPLF have secured a loan to build the railway from Mekele to Weldeya ( from Chinese Exim Bank (1.6 B) for what is clearly a killil Project, and are extorting money from Ethiopians to build what they claim to be the “Renaissance” dam (RD) for Ethiopia. It is clear TPLF is investing in education, health, infrastructure and power (Tekeze and Ashod), industries, water and irrigation and rail way systems in Tigray with an aim to make it self-sufficient, while leaving the rest of Ethiopian in ruin. The strategy is to bulid Tigray in such way that it become the powerhouse of knowledge and capital and while the rest of Ethiopia becomes a cheap source of labour and primary commodities. I have followed TPLF for the last 20 years, I have observed the following: For every big project in any other part of Ethiopia, Tigray gets an equivalent or bigger project, say if Amahra rigion get an airport, Tigray will also get one as well but not Afar or anyone else, and if The Ormoya region gets wind farm, so do Tigary but not Amahara and the rest of them. The other down side to this that everything built in the rest of Ethiopia is not of good quality, the universities in there are pf inferior quality compared to the one built in Tigray. Mekele University is now leading Ethiopia in number of collaboration and research output. In every sense you see it; the amount of attention given to Tigray is repeated nowhere else. This doesn’t require a deeper investigation; it is as open as you can get it. It can be seen by any causal observant. For the rest of the killils, projects come far in between or their qualities are left much to be desired. Let alone the new ones, institutes built by the pervious Ethiopian succssive regimes for the benefit of all Ethiopia, which are regarded as centre of excellence are left to ruin, it sufficient to mention AAU and Tikru Anbessa M. school. This is part of the grand strategy to bring about viability for kilil 1 so that it functions as independent state. If readers carefully check on the Map, they will see that railway is designed not to go through other Ethiopian territory (only the minimum possible) so that it doesn’t become dependent on other killles. That is made on purpose. Everyone knows that Ethiopia is an exporter of primary commodities and most of it comes out the rest of regions of Ethiopia, but not from Tigray. Why Tigray is given priority in this and all other things is something I would like to ask people like H. Dessalgne, Grima Biru, the 545 monkeys who are sitting in the rubber stamp parliament leaving debts that will be paid by future generations of non- Tigian Ethiopians but incurred for Tigray .

  3. The name should be the rail way no where as if Mekele provide anything to Ethiopia. The way I see it we have no use to Tigray.

WE MUST STOP BLAMING THE OPPRESSORS FOR THEIR CRIMES AND FOCUS ON WHAT WE MUST BE DOING TO LIBRATE OURSELVES FROM OUR OPPRESSORS (TPLF &CO.GANGS)

  5. Dear Muse,

Thanks for your analysis of the issue. I sincerely believe your argument is is genuine and fact, there is no intention of any racism.

Just to add few, there is no any justification what so ever to substantiate as to why such a huge investment has to be made in an area where resources are relatively limited and in an environment where terrains are very challenging for rail road. Moreover, they have all daily arial transportation service let alone within ethiopia, but internationally. I believe if the same amount of money was allocated to resource rich central and southern Ethiopia, it would have completed a spider-weaver like rail route. The central and southern areas have gentle slopes which would reduce the construction costs and will definitely ship a much higher density of resources/products so easily to various parts of the country and to the port.

However, I am not surprised by their announcement as it is their usual ‘lions share’ claim to have every investment touched on through their capital Mekelle. I have never seen such shrewd individuals who have never displayed a single rational decision in the interest of Ethiopia in their two decades of reign. These are very selfish race that have no hope of sustainability with other ethnic groups in that country.

In a separate note: I have just returned from Ethiopia recently. I witnessed in person that Ethiopia has fully been exploited by individuals from Tigray REGION. If one travels across Addis Ababa to observe the social make up, he would be surprised to lean that the traditional social set has totally been changed. All richer and relatively posh neighbourhoods have been taken over by tigrian speaking people and all rundown inner streets and sheds have been occupied by other ethnic groups. Any vehicle with newer model or better model is driven by tigrians, all hotels and entertainment centres have been used by tigrigna speakers. The owners of all high rise buildings, supermarkets, medical centres, schools, etc are tigrians. All users of private and well equipped medical centres are tigrians. I was very surprised and shocked by the way things have been changed since 2005. I am not racist, but I am very outrageous about the clan based wealth accumulation and ethnic based wealth ownership. Ethiopians must act now before it is too late to over turn this racially motivated system of governance. Unless we act now, we will remain powerless for centuries to come. These guys have controlled all the lifelines of Ethiopia as a nation. They 100% control the military, they 95% control the economy, they 100% control politics, they control all every social and public face in Ethiopia. So what about us? Do tigrian people really think this is fair? I do not believe any normal brain would deny this fact!
