Anti-expatriate propaganda and racist cartoon against Ethiopians in Arab News should come to a stop now

July 28, 2013

Dear Sirs, Greetings from India,

I am shocked and appalled at the ongoing continuous propaganda in Arab News via cartoon of Abdullah Sayel, who makes racists comments in the cartoon that is seen each day in Arab News which has editors who have no common sense of selection as they are very poor in English except one or to who are the best.I am shocked and appalled at the ongoing continuous propaganda in Arab News

As a senior newspaper editor, I concur with many Saudi, Indian and Pakistani friends that the cartoons are indeed very bad in taste and has touch of racism in it. Why this propaganda against the Ethiopian brothers and sisters and that too in the blessed month of Ramadan?

I really fail to understand the logic and stand of Arab News of embarking on this systematic hate campaign against the Ethiopians. Why the once upon a time good newspaper has suddenly become hostile towards the expatriates?

Last week Arab News launched a tirade against the Indians advocating the Saudis to get rid of the Indians. Then it started campaign against the poor Bangladeshis labeling them as dreaded criminals, followed by hate against the Pakistanis referring to them as robbers and thieves, and now the Ethiopians. Why all this anger, hate, and spitting of venom against the poor expatriates? Then Arab News protested that the expatriates had remitted 40 billion riyals to their countries, which is a sheer nonsense. Ok, what’s wrong if they remitted. They had slogged hard to earn that money and send it back home to their families and children. They did not send the money robbing or killing anyone. They had every right to send their hard earned money to their families.

May be what comes to my mind, would be to please the government. But then this is extremely cruel and bad on part of the newspaper, which it should not do.

The best for the people who are against discrimination and racism is to totally boycott Arab News and relaya the same to their friends and relatives. A paper that is totally racist and anti-expatriates should not be purchased or subscribed too. Arab News should take a lesson from Khaleej Times which was boycotted by the Indians expatriates after it ran a story against them. In two days times the circulation of Khaleej Times crashed drastically by 70 percent, no buyers, no advertisers. Perhaps this would happen to Arab News if the expatriates boycotted the newspaper.

I hope that this anti-expatriate propaganda and or racism cartoons against Ethiopians would come to a halt immediately. Activists like Mr.Abdullah Al Alami, Mr. Ahmed Al Omran, Mr. Sultan Al Qassemi, Ms. Muna Abu Sulayman, etc would ensure that this racism in Arab News against expatriates stop now.

I wish all of you a blessed and happy Ramadan.

If that is the case, why blame the Indian writer? What he is writing is on our common issue, i. e., abuse of Ethiopian and Indian immigrant workers by idiotic Arabs.

You also said, “But in reality they (Indians) are far worse than Arabs to Ethiopians at home”. Okay, let’s say Indians are worth than Arabs. Whose fault is that?

Have you heard the saying, “Balebetu yakelelewn amole chew gezi ayakebrewm”. That is what it is and itis all our fault, primarily that of woyane/TPLF.

@mario, thank you for your remark. How could we anticipate fairness from greedy people on earth unless we are complete naive? Practically,Indians and pakistanis are never sympathetic or concerned about plight of ethiopian expatriates in Dubai rather they need to mobilise our sisters and brothers for their own case. When I am saying that it doesn’t mean Ethiopians in Dubai or elsewhere in Arabian countries are safe and secure. As we all know most of those our fellow citizens crossing Red Sea to make it to Arabian countries by human traffickers or agencies run by TIgrians are uneducated peasants from Oromia and Amhara who has been illegally evicted from their own farm lands by Woyane to transfer it to Indian and Pakistani mafias supposedly referred as investors. So for me Indians/Pakistanis are not different from Woyane. On top of that please be reminded the ongoing labour exploitation committed by these cruel people on innocent peasants of Ethiopia.

      Ambasel:

I totally understand your frustration. However, let’s get the facts straight. We may hold accountable Arabs for the abuse of Ethiopians in Arab countries. We may also hold Indians and Pakistanis abuse of Ethiopians in Ethiopia.

The question is, who drove Ethiopians out of Ethiopia and put them in such precarious situations in Arab countries? Did the Arabs invite/ask us to do that? Absolutely not! The saddest and worst thing is when woyane/TPLF regime is giving deaf ear and blind eye to all the suffering of our compatriots in the hands of lunatic Arabs. That is why I said the whole thing is, “Balebetu yakelelewn amole chew gezi ayakebrewm”. Why on earth expect Arabs to respect us humanely while “our own government” is treating us like sub-humans?

Did the Indians and Pakistanis asked woyane/TPLF regime to grab Ethiopian fertile land, displace natives and abuse people at work places? Absolutely not! Woyane/TPLF regime begged them to buy land at dirt cheap prices in the name of investment through PM Hailemariam Desalegn and ambassador Genet Zewdie (you may google the PM’s and gent’s interviews by Indian media outlets at the time). Everything is on the record.

We (woyane/TPLF) asked for it, we got it. It is absurd to point fingers at the wrong people for doing the wrong stuff. First, the respect for the Ethiopian people should come from “our government” and not from the so called “expatriate investors”.

That is the truth. As, Prof. Mesfin W/Mariam put it, “እውነትን ክዶ በውሸት ከመኖር ለእውነት ሞቶ እውነትን ሕያው ማድረግ የመንፈስ ዕርገት ነው”። I also sincerely believe that is what we need most.

Why this Indian speak on our behalf? We are able to do so via our authentic radio station ESAT or pro-democracy blogs including ECADF. I think Indians mostly would like to drag Africans in their immigration issues using a min
ority category as a common ground. But in reality they are far worse than Arabs to Ethiopians at home. They are the ons exploiting our poor brothers and sisters for less than 0.50 pence wage a day. They are possessing/leasing our fertile lands from totalitarian TPLF government with cheapest price on the market. I wish this guy stop talking on our behalf. We know everything in advance before he had started writing this comment. Our people became vulnerable to any kind of abuses because of the Woyane administration. It will continue as it is now perhaps far worse unless we get rid of Woyanes through popular uprising like North AFrican Arabian countries. If not Woyane will continue to abuse us for centuries to come.

The desert rat eater Arabs used to go to Ethiopia when they poor, do business, send back money home to support their families without any problem. Then the English and Americans dug their oil wells and now they think they are above everybody on earth. Those people lack sound think. This is because what they have now is oil and not brain.

Once an idiot Saudi told me, “We do not need to go to war if we are ever attacked by any country. We can hire an entire army of a country, be it British or American and fight the war”. They saying could have some element of truth as we have seen it during the Gulf war. They are as pompous as that. In few decades all this pomposity will come to a halt. No Arab country will sit on oil wealth and abuse people from other countries. The truth and most Arabs don’t know is, most countries from which those abused expatriates come are doing good in their economy lately and emerging future powers.

Do I feel happy when Israel turns them and their land into ash? Not really, But, I hope Israel’s measures against moronic Arabs will make them think every time they abuse poor expatriates from African, Asian or Latin America.

The barbaric and racist action of Saudis and other Arab countries against hard working Ethiopians and other expatriates must end. They did no wrong, except being poor and work hard to make a living and support their families in their respective countries.

NEVER BE SURPRISED THAT THE SAUDI NEWS PAPERS AND OTHER MEDIA OUTLETS PROPAGATE AGAINST IMMIGRANT WORKERS. IT IS SAUDI STATE STATE SPONSORED PROPAGANDA AND HATRED AGAINST IMMIGRANT WORKERS. THERE IS NO MEDIA FREEDOM IN SAUDI ARABIA AND NEWS PAPERS AND OTHER MEDIA OUTLETS NEVER PUBLISH OR PUT ON THE AIR WITHOUT THE SAUDI GOVERNMENT’S KNOWLEDGE OR CONCESSION. MAY BE THESE JOURNALISTS ARE TRYING TO SECURE THEIR JOBS OR MAKE MONEY OR ARE TRYING TO GET THE ROYAL FAMILY’S ATTENTION FOR FINANCIAL REWARDS. NEVER EXPECT ANY POSITIVE COVERAGE ABOUT ETHIOPIANS IN THE SAUDI OR ANY OTHER ARAB COUNTRY’S PRESS. THEY DO NOT EVER KNOW THAT THEY ARE INSULTING FELLOW ETHIOPIAN MUSLIMS. IS IT REALLY “A MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD THING?” I DO NOT THINK SO! THE SAUDI GOVERNMENT AND AUTHORITIES ARE SO ARROGANT AND BRUTAL AGAINST HARD WORKING IMMIGRANTS. MAY THE ALL MIGHTY GOD MAKE THEM PAY THE PRICE FOR THEIR DEEDS!

the backward and coward arabs have nothing to sow and produce for their big belly. They have only oil and that will soon finish. they will come soon to africa to look for labour as gate keepers and house miads.
