Thank you all for participating and for all of your questions. I want to close with a few thoughts about Secretary Clinton’s speech on Monday at Georgetown. Here is the link to her speech:
http://www.state.gov/secretary/rm/2009a/12/133544.htm.
In the speech, the Secretary outlined the administration’s overall approach, which links human rights, democracy and development. She outlined four aspects of our approach: The first is accountability, by which we mean holding every government, including our own, to the same universal standards. Second, a principled pragmatism through which we engage with governments, allies, and foes, but keep human rights as an important priority for all of them. Third, is partnering from the bottom up, by which we mean supporting human rights groups, the media, bloggers, and others in civil society within every country. Fourth, is keeping a wide focus where rights are at stake, maintaining a focus on broad thematic issues like the rights of women, and continuing to stop the worst abuses like genocide.
I look forward to continuing an ongoing conversation. Please feel free to visit my Facebook page.
